History of Stanes School - Coonoor
Founded in 1858 by Thomas Stanes, the school is one of the oldest in the Nilgiris. Situated in the heart of the beautiful town of Coonoor at an elevation of 1850 metres a.s.l., Coonoor is easily accessible both by road and rail. Coimbatore, 80 kms away, is the nearest airhead to the town.

The salubrious year-round weather and sylvan environs make for an ideal locale for cultivating young minds.

The co-educational school, with residential facilities, is managed by the Stanes High School Council. It seeks to provide sound academics to its pupils, ensuring at the same time an opportunity to excel in sports and co-curricular activities. The school places great emphasis on the holistic development of the student. Participation in a variety of games and sporting activities is encouraged under professional supervision.
Participation in competitions at the Inter-School and District levels encourages a spirit of competition and fair play. Opportunity is also provided to participate in dramatics, elocution and other artistic pursuits. Students are exposed to the environment through group activities that inculcate a strong sense of preservation amongst them. While music is compulsory for residentstudents the learning of at least one musical instrument is encouraged.
