Stanes School, Coonoor was established by Thomas Stanes, a businessman and Philanthropist, in the year 1858. The school is situated in the hill town of Coonoor at an altitude of 1875 meters in the lush blue/green Nilgiris hills of South India.
The motto of the school 'Nisi Dominus Frustra' is taken from Psalm 127:1
"Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain".
The school is run on Christian principles and has lived up to its motto during the past 150 years.
While the High School class prepares children for the Anglo Indian School Leaving Certificate, Standards XI and XII prepare the children for the Tamilnadu Higher Secondary State Board Examinations. Both these are conducted by the Directorate of School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu.
The school is co-educational and admits both boarders and day scholars. It is run on Public school lines with a special stress on four major areas viz. academic achievement, character building, discipline and sports.
The teaching and residential staff are expected to have not only the requisite qualifications and experience but also a strong sense of vocation and devotion to duty. Their calling is to exercise the care of a parent for their pupils, who are of necessity separated from their parents, during the day and in the case of the boarders for many months of the year.
